MARTIN SMITH BIOG

I first started in the ‘biz’ with a band called ‘Charlie’, I kid you not. Well it was ’74 and we honestly didn’t know what it was slang for!!!

Charlie went on to achieve cult status in America supporting ‘The Who’, ‘Doobie Bros’, ‘Fleetwood Mac’ and ‘Focus’.

Over the next few years I learnt ‘the trade’ in various bands and projects including a spell with ‘Bowie’ sideman ‘Woody Woodmansey’. It was around this time that I realised I was becoming more interested in the studio side of things than I was ‘treading the boards’ with me axe!

I started to produce ‘Indie’ projects and ended up working for CBS, RAK and Bronze records amongst others.

In ’79 I landed a production contract with the Bronze Records and scored a few minor chart entries over the next few years.

In ’83 I teamed up with ELO sideman Richard Tandy and Dave Morgan on a solo project which Jeff Lynn contributed to. This relationship culminated in Jeff inviting me to join ELO, which of course I agreed to after thinking about it for about 2 nano seconds!!!!!
I have fond memories of playing Wembley stadium in July ’86, 80,000 people and most of them knew the words, outstanding.

In ’87 when ELO had finally disbanded ‘Garage Studio’ was born.

We started operations in January ’88, added the ‘live room’ in ’92 and we’re still here. For the last 14 years I have established a career as a Library writer for BMG-Chappell both solo and with writing partner Dominic Glynn, have had a song accepted for EuroVision, worked as a ‘Indie producer/Engineer/Programmer with BA Robertson, Mike Rutherford, John Wetton, Bap Kennedy, Viola Wills, Tina Charles, The Real Thing, Chris Slade - AC/DC, Rick Dufay - Aerosmith, Phil Picket, Katrina and the Waves and many more.

In 97’ I was commissioned by “Dressed To Kill Records” to do a tribute album, that started a long and fruitful relationship and loads of albums some of which ended up recommended by the original artists!!! [see in credits list] In recent years I have also been involved [with partner in crime ace keyboardist arranger Andy Vinter] creating educational and professional audition products for Artemis music.Andy also has a protools HD system plus a Steinway grand!!! Also we have been creating “remakes for various clients including The Real Thing, Tina Charles and Katrina and the Waves.
We in addition undertake programming work for various producers as the band!!!

The studio and my services are for hire and I can be contacted by e. mail or phone.
